Research

Two hurdles in calcium absorption, and how these two ingredients can help

Diagram of two small intestine wall sections: on the left with insufficient vitamin D, only a few calcium particles cross the intestinal wall (about 10–15%); on the right with adequate vitamin D, significantly more calcium particles pass through (about 30–40%).

Age and too little sun

As we age, the body absorbs calcium less efficiently; staying indoors all day with little sun exposure can also lead to insufficient vitamin D synthesis, making calcium even harder to absorb.

What the studies say

Vitamin D helps the small intestine absorb calcium. A review noted that when vitamin D levels are insufficient, the small intestine absorbs only about 10–15% of dietary calcium; when vitamin D levels are adequate, absorption can rise to about 30–40%.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablets a day, and how should I take them?

Take 3 tablets a day. Chew them, with no water needed. You can take them at one time or split them across the day.

What is inside?

Seven nutrients: calcium (from calcium citrate), vitamin D3, vitamin K2, magnesium, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin B6, in yogurt flavour with whole milk powder added; exact amounts per 3 tablets are listed in the Ingredients and nutrition table.

Why use calcium citrate? Can I take it if I have a sensitive stomach?

Yes. Calcium citrate does not rely on stomach acid to dissolve and is gentle on the stomach, making it suitable for people with sensitive stomachs.

How is this different from regular calcium tablets?

Three key differences: calcium comes from calcium citrate and does not rely on stomach acid to dissolve; it includes vitamins D3 and K2; and it is a yogurt-flavoured chewable tablet that you chew without water.

Why are both vitamin D3 and K2 added?

They serve different roles: D3 helps absorb calcium, while K2 helps calcium reach your bones.

Can children take this?

Children aged 4 and above can take this under adult supervision; simply chew the tablet without having to swallow pills. Not recommended for children under 4 years old.

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women take this?

Yes, but it is recommended to consult a doctor before taking this product.

Are there any side effects?

It is safe when taken at the recommended dosage. Excessive consumption may cause diarrhoea; please do not exceed 3 tablets a day.

Can I take this if I am currently taking medication?

If you are taking warfarin (a blood thinner), this product contains vitamin K and you must consult a doctor before taking it; if you are taking thyroid hormones (such as Euthyrox), take them and this product 4 hours apart; if you are taking iron supplements, take them and this product 2–4 hours apart; if you have severe kidney impairment, it is recommended to consult a doctor first.

Does it contain milk or nuts?

Yes. The ingredients include whole milk powder (derived from milk), and the label indicates it contains milk and nuts.

Are the studies on this page trials of this product?

No. These are published studies on individual ingredients, not clinical trials of this product; the formulations, dosage forms, and dosages used in the studies all differ from this product.
