Research

Fine lines, sweets and absorption: what the research says

Diagram illustrating sunlight reaching the skin, generating free radicals that break down collagen fibres.

Fine lines and elasticity

Collagen and elastin fibres keep skin firm and elastic. UV rays in sunlight put the skin under oxidative stress and create free radicals, which break down these fibres, so skin gradually loses elasticity and fine lines appear.

What the studies say

Astaxanthin is a strong natural antioxidant. In a placebo-controlled study of 49 middle-aged women, the group taking 4mg of astaxanthin a day showed clear improvements in fine lines and elasticity, as assessed by dermatologists.
